Lindholme Open, Willows Lake, Sunday 11th August
Still a month behind on my blogs so doing this largely from distant memory! Only the one match this weekend, an open which used all Willows and half of Laurels. Peg 5 on Willows, a peg I have never drawn before, was my destination for the day. In past years I would have been disappointed but this year it has had some recent form and the wind was hacking down into this end of the lake.
It's a corner peg but this was the last place I intended to fish because it is too deep next to the banking reeds, with around 4ft of water next to them. Perfect in the depths of winter but not today! I was sat in the middle of a reed bed with no margin swims either so that ruled out, probably a good thing as the margins wouldn't distract me. It didn't take much persuading to fish my usual simple Willows match. I started short on meat and had a cracking start with four F1s in four drops. Then I started getting roach bites so I went onto my favourite pellet shallow method and stayed shallow for the rest of the match. I caught really well for the opening three hours but then the swim seemed to get weaker and weaker as the wind eased and the sun came out. I also think being in this very narrow arm of the lake limited how much I could catch shallow. As I slowed down my mate Craig Elkin over on peg 52 had a storming last few hours and eventually overtook me but again a fantastic day's sport on Willows!
Match Result
1. C Elkin 188-8-0 peg 52W
2. B Fisk 173-2-0 peg 5W
3. S Barber 149-4-0 peg 38W
4. R Allen 149-2-0 (ouch!) 57O
